Geography
Urangattiri Grama Panchayat is a village panchayat located in the eastern hilly region of Malappuram district. Bordering Kozhikode district, this area is rich in natural beauty with its mountain ranges, forests, and valleys. Since a major portion of the panchayat consists of highland terrain, the region experiences a cool climate and possesses rich biodiversity.
Areas such as Mailadi, Panniyanmala, Kodumbuzha, Cheengannippali, and Odakkayam, situated near the Chekkunnu hills, are known for their dense forests and rocky landscapes. Numerous small streams and waterfalls further enhance the scenic beauty of the region. Some areas connected to the Chaliyar river basin have also developed as agricultural zones.
The major crops cultivated here include rubber, pepper, coconut, arecanut, and banana. Agriculture in the region largely depends on rainfall. Due to the heavy monsoon rains, the area is well known for its lush green landscape.
Because of its hilly terrain, transportation and infrastructure development were once difficult in the region. However, later road development and the establishment of educational institutions contributed significantly to rural progress. Rich in natural resources and forest wealth, Urangattiri is considered one of the environmentally important hill panchayats in Malappuram district.
